Camas National Wildlife Refuge

Sandhill Crane by Linda Wentz

The Camas National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in east Idaho provides resting and nesting habitat for dozens of migrating birds. It’s a birding hotspot that has suffered from drought in recent years. Friends of Camas National Wildlife Refuge is working closely with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to restore ecological function to this important area. Boise State University’s Intermountain Bird Observatory (IBO) conducts bird banding at the site to measure bird population trends. The May Monthly Program features Tim Reynolds from Friends of Camas NWR and Lucian Davis, IBO researcher at Camas NWR.

Tim will introduce Camas NWR and provide a history from inception to today, highlighting the management challenges regarding water. He will discuss the Friends of Camas organization and the relationship and accomplishments with the USFWS Camas NWR. Tim will present information on the biotic resources of Camas, highlighting birds, and provide information on how to get there, what amenities exist on the refuge, lodging, where to look for birds, etc.
