The Miracle on Palmyra

Palmyra Atoll is a cluster of islands 1,000 miles south of Hawaii; it has never had permanent inhabitation and today exists as a research base jointly administered by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Matt Miller, a writer for TNC, was able to visit and participate in a research program. He’ll share the unique ecology and history of this unique island, as well as its incredible conservation success story. Although it was never permanently inhabited, a US Navy presence introduced rats during WWII. But now Palmyra is rat free and the results are astonishing…for birds, crabs and even the coral reef.

Matt Miller is the Editor of The Nature Conservancy’s Cool Green Science blog. He lives in Boise where he enjoys adventure birding.
