What Bird Is That?

Tips for Bird ID In the Field with John Rakestraw

December 5, 6-7:30 pm on Zoom

Identifying the birds you see and hear makes birding an oftentimes rewarding but sometimes frustrating activity. The more often you see or hear a species, the easier it is to recognize, but birds are notorious for being far away, in shadows, and always moving.

What do you do if you find a bird you don’t know and you don't have an expert around to ID it for you (or a super zoom camera)? How do you go about quickly gathering the information you need to identify the mystery bird before it disappears?

This online class will lead you through the process of identifying birds, showing you what to look and listen for in a quick and methodical manner so you can quickly gather all the information you need to make the ID.

John Rakestraw was born and raised in Indiana, and he worked as a naturalist in Kansas and Ohio before settling in Oregon.  John is a freelance writer, author of Birding Oregon and a regular teacher for Bird Alliance of Oregon and Golden Eagle Audubon Society.

This class is suited for all levels of birders.

The class will be on Zoom. All registrants will be provided a link to the class recording.

This class is open to everyone.

Registration fee:

  • Non-members - $30

  • Golden Eagle Audubon Society current members (as of date of registration) - $20
