Ada County hosts a variety of gull species during the winter, and no, they don’t all look alike! Learning to identify gulls may seem intimidating, and some individual birds stump even the experts. But most gulls are pretty easy to identify once you know what to look for. And unlike warblers and flycatchers, gulls will often sit still and allow you to study them. John Rakestraw, author of Birding Oregon, will show you the characteristics that make each species unique, allowing you to enjoy identifying gulls rather than just looking the other way. All registrants will be provided a link to the class recording.
John Rakestraw worked as a naturalist in Kansas and Ohio before settling in Oregon. He is the author of Birding Oregon, has written for birding and nature magazines, and leads classes and field trips. He blogs at ethicalbirder.com and shares photos on Instagram @rakestrawbirder.
This class will be geared to the experienced birder.
GEAS volunteers will lead gull birding trips to the Ada County Landfill open only to class registrants on December 15 and 16 from 10 am - noon (one per registrant). The field trip sign-up link will be provided after you register for the class.
